Count the days from today to the next time your birth date comes round: the calculator gives you the days and hours left, the age you are turning and the weekday it falls on. Enter a date of birth to see them.
The formula
Next birthday
this year's date of birth, or next year's if it has already passedDays to go
days = next birthday − todayHours to go
hours = days × 24 − the hours already gone todayAge turning
turning = year of the next birthday − year of birthEverything is counted on calendar dates, so daylight saving never adds or takes away an hour from the days.
Worked example
If you add the time as 14:30, 870 minutes of today are gone, so the countdown becomes 249 days, 9 hours and 30 minutes, or 5,985.5 hours.
When to use it, and the mistakes to avoid
Use it to plan a party or a present, to count down to a milestone birthday, or to find out which weekday a birthday falls on in a year to come.
- Counting from the wrong date. 'Count from' starts as today; change it only to look at another day.
- Forgetting that 29 February moves. The birthday is counted on 1 March in a common year.
- Reading 'turning' as your age now. It is the age at the next birthday.
- Expecting hours without a time. Without a time it counts from midnight; add the time for an exact figure.
- Mixing up the date order. Pick the day, month and year in the date field rather than typing them.
FAQ
How do I count the days until my birthday?
Find your next birthday: this year's date if it has not come round yet, otherwise next year's. Then count the days from today to that date. This calculator does it for you from your date of birth, and shows the hours, the age you are turning and the weekday as well.
What if my birthday is on 29 February?
In a year with no 29 February, the birthday is counted on 1 March, the same rule the age calculator uses. In a leap year it falls on the 29th. The calculator tells you when it has moved your birthday to 1 March.
How does it work out the hours?
It multiplies the days by 24 from the start of today. If you add the time now, it takes off the hours already gone, so at 14:30 there are 14 and a half fewer hours than at midnight. The countdown reads in days, hours and minutes.
Why does it say I am turning one year more than my age now?
Because it shows the age you reach on the next birthday, not your age today. If you are 31 and your birthday is next month, you are turning 32. On the day of your birthday it counts the birthday that is today, and you are turning the age you just became.
Can I count down to someone else's birthday, or from another date?
Yes. Enter their date of birth, and change 'Count from' to any date to see how far away their birthday was or will be from then. The weekday shown is the day of the week the birthday falls on, so you can plan around it.
